Target Audience: Interpreters of any level Workshop Description: A panel of 3 sign language experts: Drs. Joseph Hill, Melanie Cody and Jami Fisher will provide insight about different varieties of sign language use in the US, such as Black ASL, Native American Sign Language, as well as ASL regional variation. Panelists will give a brief presentation on the topics listed above as well as engage in open discussion moderated by Dr. Lori Whynot. Participants will gain an understanding about language diversity in our Deaf communities.Īt the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:ġ) Identify different types of signs in use by varied groups in the US.Ģ) Acquire an appreciation for the diversity of language used in deaf US communities as reported on post panel evaluation form.ģ) Demonstrate expanded awareness of sign language diversity by participating in Q & A with panelists.
